Hormone Receptor Laboratory Facilities

The Hormone Receptor Laboratory is located in the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and consists of 1360 sq. ft. of research space composed of a large multi-purpose laboratory (880 sq. ft.), two small laboratories devoted to biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, and a tissue culture room. The laboratories are well equipped with chemical benches, fume hoods, biohazard containment, and cold rooms are located nearby.

Offices for the Hormone Receptor Laboratory consist of: 1) 200 sq. ft. for a desk and conference table; 2) two rooms (150 sq. ft. each) for 4 research fellows total; 3) 140 sq. ft. for the administrative assistant and fileserver; and 4) secretarial space outside these offices. One Canon® NP-350F copy machine and one Murata® F-75 fax machine support the offices.

The laboratories and the offices are equipped with a number of workstations, Compaq Presario Pentium personal computers and CompuAdd® 486 personal computers, and printers, all connected into a LAN (Local Area Network). The LAN is administered utilizing Novell® Netware. In addition to an extensive software library for word processing, graphics, and statistics, the laboratory utilizes a Paradox® database and Lundon One-Site®, Two-Site®, and Compete® programs for sophisticated ligand binding analyses.

The following pieces of equipment are used at the laboratories: Beckman and Shimadzu High Performance Liquid Chromatography Systems, Beckman TL-100, L8-M and L8-70 Preparative Ultracentrifuges and Rotors, Sorvall RC5 Intermediate Speed Centrifuge and Rotors, Sorvall RC3 Low Speed Centrifuge and Rotors, Beckman LS-3801 and 1801 Liquid Scintillation Counting Systems, Beckman Model DU-640 Recording Spectrophotometer, Micromedics Gamma Counter, Brinkmann Tissue Grinder, Liquid Nitrogen Dispenser, Bio-Rad polyacrylamide gel electrophoreses apparatus, and New Brunswick Incubator/Shaker. Several ultralow freezers are present for preservation of an extensive tissue bank used in other research, but space is extremely limited.

The Brown Cancer Center and the School of Medicine have excellent support services for multifaceted investigations. These include an outstanding medical library, a modern machine and electronics shop, a state-of-the-art medical illustrations department, a copy center, and an information technology department with 12-hour help desk service.
